Today is the auspicious disappearance day of Srila Kasisvara Pandit.
Srila Kasisvara Pandit was a disciple of Ishvara Puri who had received much mercy from him. For this reason he is counted as one of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s branches. Shri Govinda was also Ishvara Puri’s disciple. Both of them devotedly served their spiritual master as long as he was present in this world. Just before he disappeared, he instructed them both to go engage in Mahaprabhu’s service. Govinda was the first to come to Puri to serve the Lord after the disappearance of their guru; Kashishvara travelled throughout India on a pilgrimage before finally coming to Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet.
I am a servant of Ishvara Puripada, my name is Govinda. On his order I have come to You. At the time of his departure, my master ordered me: Go to Shri Krishna Chaitanya and serve Him. Kashishvara will also come after he has seen the pilgrimage sites. I have come directly to You. (Chaitanya Charitamrita 2.10.132-4)
On another day, Kashishvara Gosani arrived; the Lord greeted him respectfully and gave him a place to stay with Him.
(Chaitanya Charitamrita 2.10.185)
The Lord turned to Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, Sarvabhauma answered that He should most certainly obey the instruction of His spiritual master and so the Lord did as His guru had ordered Him and accepted Govinda and Kashishvara Pandit as His personal servants.
Srila Kasisvara Pandit was extremely strong. Sri Kavikarnapura Goswami writes: “Kasisvara Pandit and Sri Govinda were formerly those servants of Krsna in Vraja named Bhrngara and Bhangura who used to bear water from the Yamuna for Krsna.” Srila Kasisvara Pandit spent much time in Puri-dhama in the service of Sri Caitanya. He used to serve prasada to the devotees after the kirtanas.
Srila Kasisvara Pandit had a disciple named Sri Govinda Gosani who was a great servant of the Sri Govinda Deity. When Sri Rupa Goswami was in Vrndavana, he established the service of the Govinda Deity. Upon hearing this, Caitanya Mahaprabhu was highly pleased. He quickly sent Kasisvara Pandit to Vrndavana to assist Rupa Goswami. But Kasisvara Pandit did not want to give up the association of the Lord in Puri. Sri Caitanya, as the Paramatma, the Supersoul living in everyone’s heart, could understand the mind of his devotee. He gave him a deity which was identical with his very self. Kasisvara Pandit took that deity of Caitanya Mahaprabhu with him, and by serving and feeding that deity, he was solaced in his separation from Caitanya Mahaprabhu. In this connection, Sri Narahari Cakravarti Thakura remarks in his Bhakti-ratnakara as follows: “Kasisvara Pandit told Caitanya Mahaprabhu, ‘I cannot bear to leave you behind.’ The Lord understaood the heart of Kasisvara Pandit and gave him a deity of Himself which was so carefully formed as to resemble the Lord exactly. Seeing that deity of Caitanya Mahaprabhu eating all the offerings placed before Him, Kasisvara Pandit experienced great ecstasy. Caitanya Mahaprabhu told him to call the deity ‘Gaura-Govinda.’ Taking that deity with him, Kasisvara Pandit went to Vrndavana. That deity sat to the left of the Sri Govinda deity and in this way wonderful service was performed for the pleasure of the Sri Govinda deity.”
